“I’ve learned that true friends are the ones who come with us, even—especially—when they don’t have to. My books often explore the transformative power of friendship.”

Meet the Author

My childhood home was atop a high hill in the exact geographic center of San Francisco, CA. Our humble neighborhood included the lofty name “Mount Olympus” and a statue of the Greek god Zeus. But I knew that the coolest place in our neighborhood was a building down off Haight Street, just beside Golden Gate Park. Each week, I’d walk down to that library, where the thrill of story treasures would override common sense. I’d check out a HUGE stack of books – Nancy Drew, Hardy Boys, Little House in the Woods, Wizard of Oz sequels… – only to have to trudge back up the steep climb that is Masonic Avenue, arms aching. Then Read, Return, Repeat.

Writing books keeps that thrill very much alive for me.

You Probably Didn’t Know This About Me
– Until Now

  • At sixteen, I joined a band so I could sing R&B, Rock and Roll and pop Ballads. I still compose and recently recorded songs to go with several of my books.
  • I graduated from University of California, Santa Cruz, and hopped on a plane to travel solo in Europe for most of a year.
  • For five years I worked as a machinist making highly precise and very beautiful scientific instruments.
  • I loved my work as a certified hypnotist to relieve pain and stress for both private and hospitalized clients.
  • I’ve danced salsa and bachata in Latin performance teams on stages from San Francisco to Reno, Las Vegas and San Antonio.
  • Since Russia’s Invasion in 2022, I do a weekly Sunday Storytime with kids in Ukraine, including stories and songs. These war-torn kids are smart, resilient and inspiring. I hope to one day meet them in person.

About the Illustrators

Lucy Arnold

Lucy Arnold

Nature is my primary source of inspiration, and color my main mode of expression. I love combining art and science. I often feature real species in my paintings, as I can’t imagine subjects more wonderful and bizarre than those actually found in nature.
